Subscription Information:

The Journal of the Holy Roman Empire is the biannual e-publication of the Society for the Study of the Holy Roman Empire, published every year in the Spring and the Fall. Access is free to members and non-members alike.

Contribution Information:

We welcome serious scholarly contributions from all avenues of historical inquiry, including but certainly not limited to political, religious, gender, social, economic, and military history. The goal of the Journal of the Holy Roman Empire is to foster scholarship on historical issues that cross the boundaries of the modern nation-state and of historiographical periodization. We encourage submissions with either a local or Empire-wide focus, but we especially hope to provide a forum for research that concerns more than one modern state or that considers Empire-wide institutions, culture, or history. For more specific guidelines, please see below.

Guidelines for Manuscript Submissions:

Contributions should be original scholarly work that has not been published previously and has not been simultaneously submitted to other journals for publication. Articles should include an abstract of not more than 150 words, written in English, that clearly defines the thesis of the work. Please include the full address of the author, including email address, and the title of the work on a separate title page. Manuscripts should ordinarily be between 5000-8000 words, but may be no longer than 10,000 words (excluding notes, tables, and abstract). All papers submitted to JHRE will be assessed through a double blind peer review. All accepted manuscripts are subject to editorial modification.

Please send all submissions in electronic form via email attachment to jhreditors@gmail.com. To ensure that we can read the attachment, please send all manuscripts in Microsoft Word or RTF format only. We very much prefer electronic submissions, but for those who are unable to send their manuscripts by email, please send two paper copies, double spaced, and a hard electronic version (on CD) to the snail-mail address below.

Please double-space the entire manuscript, including the documentation, and include page numbers on all pages. In general, please follow the style set by the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th (or latest) edition.
